Indoor Air Quality Testing
Indoor Air Quality Testing
You should have more than just an energy efficient home. You and your family should have a safe, healthy and energy efficient home. Ecotelligent Homes is the only company servicing Metro Detroit to include air quality testing as part of our home energy audit and the only company with a BPI Certified Healthy Homes Evaluator. You can trust the professionals at Ecotelligent Homes to provide a holistic review of your home and follow the latest industry standards for eliminating indoor air pollutants, ventilating fresh filtered air, and monitoring your family’s air quality.
What does an indoor air quality test check for?
When completing an indoor air quality test, we sample the air for five key indicators:
Temperature
During our indoor air quality testing, we target each room to be between 64°F and 77°F. If a room is too warm, a person can become dehydrated. If it is too cold, the air can become dry which can lead to poor immune system performance.
Humidity
The idea humidity in a home is 30% to 50%. This humidity level prevents mold growth in your home. It is also a comfortable humidity level for your body to feel comfortable. The higher the humidity level, the more likely you are to sweat inside your home.
Carbon Dioxide
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) should ideally be around 400 parts per million (ppm) in your home for the optimal healthy living space. The CO2 level can go as high as 1000 ppm though. The higher the level, the more likely the CO2 is going to affect your cognitive abilities.
Total Volatile Organic Compound
Ecotelligent checks for Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOCs) during indoor air quality testing. TVOCs are chemicals, natural and man-made, that are often found in the home such as household cleaners, paint, furniture, carpets and sealants. These chemicals are tested together due to the health effects they have as a group.
Particle Matter (PM 2.5)
Fine dust, specifically matter that is 2.5 microns (PM2.5) or smaller, can lead to health problems as it travels into the respiratory tract and bloodstream. Short-term PM2.5 can cause allergy and asthma attacks as well as trigger eczema. Long-term PM2.5 is linked to heart disease and cancer.
Improving Indoor Air Quality in Your Metro Detroit Home with Whole Home Ventilation
At Ecotelligent Homes we have been recommending and installing whole home ventilation systems for years to help our clients with high performing homes realize the health and safety benefits of controlled fresh air.
What are the benefits of a whole home ventilation system?
In addition to improving your indoor air quality, a whole home ventilation system can
- Maintain a comfortable home temperature
- Reduce energy waste
- Remove home odors
A whole home ventilation system should not be installed without first completing a blower door test to measure the home’s natural air infiltration and completing calculations to determine fresh air needed. New construction codes in Michigan require some form of whole home ventilation system to ensure good indoor air quality.
In addition to a whole home ventilation system, there is a wide range of fresh air ventilation systems to improve your home’s indoor air quality. Some fresh air ventilation systems that we use include:
- Local bathroom exhaust fans equipped with a timer
- Dampened fresh air supply systems installed in your ductwork
- Balanced air exchange systems
- High efficiency energy recovery ventilation
